How many children attend the school? For the 2015 - 2016 school year there are 155 students enrolled.
Why aren't there other school options? Although Haiti's constitution requires that public school education is offered for free, the government has not been able to fulfill that obligation. Only about 60% of school age children in Haiti actually attend school. Of those children, approximately one fifth attend the country's few government-funded schools. All of the other children attend private schools which charge tuition and require school uniforms. Families struggling to provide basic needs cannot afford to pay school fees or buy uniforms.
How much does it cost to sponsor a child? To sponsor a CEFJ student, the cost is $35.00 US a month or $420.00 US a year.
How are the funds used? Sponsorship funds are used to provide the children with: registration and tuition, a uniform and school supplies, and school specific activities and improvement initiatives.
Do I have to sign up to sponsor a child for the whole year? No, you can also make a one-time gift in any amount. One-time donations are pooled together and used to help fund unsponsored children or, in the event that all children are sponsored, enable us to meet unexpected expenses.
What language is taught in school? The children are taught in Haitian Creole and French. At the 7th grade level, English and Spanish are introduced.
What subjects are taught? CEFJ follows the curriculum of the National Education Ministry which has 5 components: Mathematics, Creole, French, Social Sciences, and Experimental Sciences. At the 7th grade level, English and Spanish are added. Creative Arts is included at all levels.
What grades are taught at the school? There are currently classes beginning at the kindergarten level through 7th grade. Next year we hope to add 8th and 9th grade.
